Unless otherwise stated, the materials on this website are published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 UK: England & Wales License. Where this is the case, these materials can be downloaded, printed out, copied and distributed for non-commercial purposes free of charge provided that due credit is given to www.poverty.ac.uk, part of the ESRC PSE: UK research programme, and (where relevant) the author(s). If you alter, transform or build on any of the materials on this site, you may distribute the resulting work only under a Creative Commons license identical to this one.

Certain materials on this website, including most of the videos, are copyright of the PSE website, part of the PSE: UK research project. Where PSE copyright is identified, the materials may only be produced with the written permission of the PSE website team. To seek such permission you must contact us.

Certain materials are published with the permission of the original copyright holder(s). Where the copyright is identified as belonging to a third party, the materials must not be reproduced and distributed without the permission of the original copyright holder. These third party materials include most of the images, some of the videos, the texts from Poverty in the UK, Poor Britain and Breadline Britain in the 1990s and other materials identified as third party copyright.

Comments policy

Comments are enabled on various pages on www.poverty.ac.uk and we are keen to hear all points of view so please do post comments and join in the debates. If you are under 16, we request that you ask the permission of your parent or guardian before joining in.

Postings are moderated and any material that does not (in our judgement) comply with the standards set will be removed. Participants who consistently break the guidelines will have their posting privileges removed. Our decisions are considered final.

There are ten guidelines we expect all participants to follow:

  1. We welcome disagreement with articles and wish to encourage debate but it must be undertaken with respect to others and their opinions. Personal attacks and abuse will not be tolerated. We wish to encourage an informed and intelligent discussion of topics and will distinguish between constructive, focused argument and comments based on insults and smears. Please respect other people’s views and beliefs and consider your impact on others when making your contribution.
  2. No personal information should be given about the participant or anyone else. This includes email and postal addresses, phone numbers and social network or instant message identities.
  3. Do not be offensive or rude or act in a way that will cause undue offence to others. Postings containing profanity, sexually graphic or offensive language, etc. will be deleted.
  4. Racism, sexism, homophobia or other forms of hate-speech, or contributions that could be interpreted as such, will not be tolerated. While it is legitimate to criticise a particular government, organisation, community or belief, it is illegitimate to attack people on the basis of their race, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.
  5. Any potentially libellous or defamatory postings will be removed.
  6. Do not post materials for which you do not hold the copyright unless the permission of the relevant copyright owners has been gained. If material is posted for which copyright is not held, the individual posting the information shall be held solely responsible.
  7. If any illegal activity is suggested or encouraged then the posting will be removed and the posting may be reported to the appropriate authorities.
  8. Commercial postings, advertising and any spam-like materials will be removed. This is an advertising-free site and postings containing commercial or promotional messages – including but not limited to references to internet sites, URLs or links to other commercial websites – will be removed. Frequent postings of external links to other non-commercial organisations may also be judged not to be relevant to the website.
  9. Try to be clear and precise about what you are saying and remember that people may misunderstand your contribution if sarcasm and humour are employed.
  10. Keep your contribution relevant and informed. We wish to encourage discussion based on evidence and research, and we reserve the right to remove postings which we judge to be based on wild generalisations, prejudice, uninformed assumptions and divisive partisanship, or which in some other way may debase the site. We also reserve the right to remove postings that are unrelated to the topic under discussion. Please do not post the same message more than once.

Please tell us of any potential problems and if you spot something that you regard to be upsetting in community interaction areas, please contact us.

This information will be used only for analysing responses to the survey questionnaires and will not be used in any way that could enable an individual to be identified.
